School Profile :

Fulneck School
Fulneck School is a leading, co-educational school, located in Leeds, England. We educate young people between the ages of 3 and 18; boarders are accepted from the age of 9. Throughout their time here at Fulneck our pupils flourish and become confident, well-rounded, young adults. Fulneck School has long had a reputation for high academic standards and its students boast some of the best academic results in the area, with all pupils gaining entry to their first choice university. Pupils largely follow the National Curriculum and study towards public examinations, in which Fulneck exceeds national averages. The broad curriculum covers all aspects of life – spiritual, moral, social, academic, creative, cultural and physical – ensuring the balanced development of all pupils from the age of 3.

Our philosophy
Although we are first and foremost a centre of education, Fulneck School is about much more than just examination results and academic ability. The individual development of each pupil is underpinned by the encouragement of self-discipline and responsibility. We encourage learning through experience and as such the extracurricular programme is fundamental in providing pupils with broader life experiences. Pupils are encouraged to take part in as many activities as possible; with numerous societies and clubs to choose from, pupils are spoilt for choice.

Tailored education

We embrace individuality and understand that your child’s needs are unique. To ensure the best possible education for all our pupils, we provide a number of opportunities and a wide range of facilities. Whether a pupil has an exceptional talent that needs nurturing or struggles in some way with learning, we have the resources in place to give them a first-class education.

Our Comenian Programme for exceptionally gifted pupils has been developed to support our academically most able and creatively challenged pupils. We help individuals realise their full potential by nurturing their aspirations and guiding motivation. All subject areas throughout the School differentiate according to ability, challenging and extending the development of the most gifted pupils.

There is no barrier to success. Our Learning Support Unit has been awarded one of the highest special learning needs accolades by CReSTeD (Council for the Registration of Schools Teaching Dyslexic Pupils). As a category DU registered school offering a Dyslexia Unit, Fulneck School offers specialist one-to-one tuition within the School as well as support for dyslexic students in all areas of the curriculum.

Facilities
The School is situated only 15 minutes from the centre of Leeds yet overlooks the picturesque Tong Valley, enabling the pupils to benefit from city living in a tranquil country environment – the best of both worlds in our opinion. The original Grade I listed, 18th-century, buildings have been tastefully refurbished to meet today’s educational needs without losing their essential character. In more recent years, new buildings and facilities have been added to the site including a Gymnasium, The Comenius Centre (a performing arts centre and theatre), Design & Technology Centre, Science Block, Joan Mort House (the sixth-form centre), The Robinson Building (a multipurpose teaching block), sporting pavilions, extensive sports fields, tennis and netball courts, and landscaped gardens. The pupils also have access to a nine-hole golf course and horse-riding stables on their doorstep.

The School is placed in a prime location for both commuters and boarding pupils. Manchester Airport is one hour from the School, Leeds Bradford International Airport 20 minutes and Leeds City rail station 15 minutes from the site.

Boarding life
Fulneck is a popular boarding school with separate houses for boys and girls. Boarding is offered on a full, weekly or flexible basis, reflecting the needs of the modern family. Your child’s needs are catered for in our relaxed family atmosphere where the needs of the individual are paramount. Most students are accommodated in single or double rooms. Fulneck staff aim to make pupils feel at home, in safe and secure surroundings. There is a strong welfare structure, supervised homework sessions and organised activities throughout the week and at weekends. Pupils are encouraged to communicate regularly with family and friends. The boarding houses have their own ICT facilities and older students have controlled access to the internet in their own study-bedrooms. In order to meet the needs of overseas students who need to improve their English, we provide additional lessons in English as an Additional Language.

Admissions
Admission is by entrance examination and, in the case of younger pupils, a taster day. It is advised that parents register their children early to secure a place on the Fulneck School waiting list.

Are there any scholarships or bursaries?

Yes. Academic scholarships are awarded on merit at age 11+ and on entry to the 6th Form and cover up to a maximum of 50% of fees. Bursaries are at the Governors’ discretion and are means-tested. Some additional fees concessions are available to members of HM forces

and clergy.

AVERAGE A LEVEL POINTS PER CANDIDATE, 2010

On recently released government data just reported on the BBC website, Fulneck Sixth Form achieved an outstanding position in relation to the 50 Sixth Forms in the Leeds area and to other independent schools or high-performing maintained schools in the region. We are second out of the 50 Sixth Forms in Leeds, ahead of the Grammar School at Leeds! Our highest position on record. A fantastic achievement for the school!
